Walthamstow is overwhelmingly a terrace neighbourhood — long runs of Victorian and Edwardian two-storey houses with a rear outrigger and a narrow side return alongside it. That single characteristic shapes most of the building work here.

The side return extension is the defining project. Filling that strip and taking the kitchen across the full width of the house turns a dark galley into the main room of the property, and because the footprint gained is modest it is often achievable without the complications a larger rear extension brings.
